Darkness followed by a two-second flash of a recent shot of Phoenix in the ring during a match?the camera focused on him, the opponent out of frame. It fades.

Voiceover (Matt) during video shot: Just you.

Darkness followed by a two-second flash of a recent shot of Matt Griffen in the ring during a match?the camera focused on him, the opponent out of frame. It fades.

Voiceover (Matt) during video shot: Just me.

Darkness followed by a five-second circling/rotating elevated shot of an open topped, cage enclosed ring.

Voiceover (Matt) during video shot: The caged ring and? the TKOW title.

The current TKOW ?Fiery? title blazes into the shot, burning the scene away until only it remains--aflame.

Voiceover (Matt): Here we are. Again. Student versus mentor. Friend versus friend in an all out battle for that gold you currently hold.

The ?Fiery? belt?s flames fade and die as Matt Griffen?s image gradually appears during the last sentence. The last of the blaze fades into Griffen?s strawberry blonde locks, contrasting his predominantly green eyes. He stands before a grassy green hill, his arms folded across his chest. The sun shines down brightly and a breeze abounds, stirring and lifting his hair. A roaring sound dominates the background noise, but he is easily and clearly heard.

Matt: It was a long time coming wasn?t it, Phoenix? A long time until you won a major title and was able to keep it without it being retired or stripped from you. You voluntarily gave up the Ultimate Chaos title. You knew it was worthless. The UC was merely a stepping stone to that title you now have? a title you?re going to lose come MegaBowl V. No you say?

Griffen glances momentarily away from the camera, gathering his thoughts before looking back and continuing, choosing his words carefully.

Matt: It?s possible you could retain, but you?re not focused. Too much is on your mind--Carpenter, Aello... and that thing your brother dangles in front of you like a carrot before a horse. You do only what?s necessary lately and barely that. You will lose the title?either first to me in Round One, or later to Burden or Tyrenus in the finals.

Griffen shifts slightly, readjusting his folded arms across his chest over the Section 8 muscle shirt he wears.

Matt: You aren?t the Phoenix I want to face for the TKOW title. The Phoenix I want to face at MegaBowl V is focused. He hasn?t been seen since he defeated Soulfly for the belt at Holiday Hell and Jace Mingla in the Bloodmoney Hitman Ladder Match at last year's MegaBowl. THAT Phoenix is the man who will show me my worth. THAT Phoenix is the man who will test me and prove to me whether I?m good enough to deserve winning that belt.

Griffen pauses as a group of five people (man, woman, and three kids), carrying fishing poles and other fishing accessories, pass in front of him as the camera pulls back. He drops his arms, quickly glancing down, and sighs. A look of determination fills his face when he looks back up, stepping forward and grasping the iron railing before him. His eyes are more deeply green. An occasional light spray of water enters the shot from below.

Matt: Every time I've come up against you in the past, pal, I've come up short. Not this time. You have that killer instinct to incinerate your friends when need be. That's something that's been a long time coming for me toward you, but I see it's necessary to take the title from you. That's the state of mind in which I have to face you and in order to defeat you. So that's what I'm going to do. From now until our match ends, I consider you a foe. I refuse to acknowledge our friendship.

A grim look crosses his face. He stares into the camera, his lips thinning into lines.

Matt: You will not show me any mercy or concern, so I'll show none for you and expect none. You won't catch me unawares again like you did in the HPWA brutality title match.

One of Griffen's younger twin brothers enters the frame from the left, accompanied by their younger, red-headed, sister Abby. Both carry fishing tackle and poles and stop before getting too close to their brother. The camera focuses in again only on Griffen.

Matt: Phoenix, you are the enemy and I plan on taking that title from you, come hell, highwater, or the end of the world.

A large spray of water shoots up between Griffen and the camera. The camera pans down to show the source, revealing the turbulent downstream flow of water emerging from the outlet of a dam as the scene fades.

A feed begins to slowly cut in. It starts off as a static cut feed, then slowly focuses in to show the dank Phoenix Pit. The screen flickers between color and b&w, and there is just enough static left to make the darkness seem even more foreboding. We see a man alone in the dark room sitting opposite the camera, which is leaning on a slight slant. Through the grainy feed we can make out the rest of the Pit.

That man is sitting on a pile of busted tables, cracked kendo sticks, flattened trashcans, and dented chairs, among other weapons. Many of these are rusted and/or stained with blood. The pile is set in such a way that it resembles a throne. A black steel baseball bat leans on the side of the pile, within reach. The main light source in the room is a fire pit that is between him and the camera. In the far reaches of the room, flames dance high along the walls, creating an atmosphere like everything is burning.

Chains are hanging in various places in the Pit. One side of an HPWA Brutality Cage is leaning against the back wall. A black steel ladder is shown against the side wall, and dented chairs with names scratched in them are hanging like trophies. Names like 'Jacko', 'Hitman', 'Armageddon', 'Cobryn', 'Pagan', 'Haven', 'Sadler', 'Soulfly', 'Soutter', and three blackened and burnt chairs with 'Rave', 'D. Dynamite', and 'Soulfly'. Alongside them are replicas of nine title belts and the broken 2004 TKOW King of the Jungle trophy.

The man, shadowed in darkness, stares at the flames in front of him, entranced by the fire. A leather jacket is draped over the pile of weapons, and the fire shines off the TKOW "Fiery" Title. He is leaning forward, a sad, tired look permeating the cloth mask that hides his upper facial features.

{They fear you.}

Phoenix: I have been TKOW Champion for over seven months now. In that time, I?ve only defended it once. To be fair, the first three months of my ?reign? was marred with a near shutdown of the company. To the dismay of the doubters, I?ve remained active, bringing my Holiday Hell record of 15 and 0 to a wondrous, record breaking 18 and 0.

{I don?t fear you.}

Phoenix: In a few short weeks, I come up against the second greatest test of my career. The first was when I won the UCW World Title from D-Matic, then flew up the coast to participate in Ring Syndicate?s ?Genesis? event, where I teamed with Hero to defeat Dan Stein and Matt Griffen, only to fail to win the battle royal for a shot at the Ring Syndicate World Title.

{They think you?re unstoppable.}

Phoenix: I failed that night. But that night parallels this one. I had to face Matt Griffen then to advance to the true test, and the true prize. And once again, here we are, facing off. The prize, within reach. The win, on our tongues. The price, more than we can bear.

{I?ve frozen you in your boots.}

Phoenix: There are many things that have happened in my life that I am not proud of. Moments where I stooped to levels I would have rather burnt to ash then embrace.

{You claim to be a servant of heaven.}

Phoenix: At Mass Khaos, I became, at odds, with those closest to me. I was brought to that point by my own flesh, my own blood, my brother.

{I know you?re really the devil in disguise.}

Phoenix: Isn?t it interesting, then, that with the delays, MegaBowl V takes place on our father?s birthday?

{Those you care about, ultimately become ashamed of you. Your actions. Your words. Your very being.}

Phoenix: What will my father think of me then? On that day, I have to hunt down my own brother. On that day, I must maim my friend. On that day-

{You become me.}

Phoenix: -I become him.

{I?ve seen your soul. The fire that burns within you is black as night. You beg for release. You beg to let go. You beg to be free.}

Phoenix: Matt, from the moment I first saw you training, I knew, in my gut, you would be great. I took you under my wing to train you, not because I believed I was worthy of being a teacher, but because I wanted you at my side. A like minded individual that had the power, the fortitude, the emotion, to stand with me, and stand against me.

{What happens, when your mind has changed?}

Phoenix: Now, after all the time, all the battles, the blood, the pain, the heartache, we must do battle again. The steel cage, cool, smooth, solid, calls to us, beckons to us, begs us, to break each other within its walls.

{Oh the tangled web we weave, when soon we fail, to deceive?}

Phoenix: I hold three things that mean something to you, Matt. I represent three things that would shine up your entire career.

{You represent pain.}

Phoenix: I represent the TKOW Title. The most illustrious championship in the business today. A title so full of its own radioactive history, no one has the guts to try and take it.

{You represent destruction.}

Phoenix: I represent a perfect record. Eighteen wins, no losses. If I leave MegaBowl V with that belt, I leave with a twenty and zero record.

{You represent betrayal.}

Phoenix: I represent two wins over you. I pinned you at Genesis. I put you out for ten to take your Brutality title. MegaBowl, can make it three.

{You. Will. Break. Him.}

Phoenix: At MegaBowl V, Matt, you and I will make something great.

{You will make him bleed.}

Phoenix: We will show the world why we are two of the very best in the business.

{You will make him suffer.}

Phoenix: We will show the world why every fed wants us, and no fed will work with us.

The scene begins to fade, static taking over the screen.

{You will make him cry.}

Phoenix: The only question you need to have, Matt, is;

When the smoke clears, which one of us will be left standing, with this.
*pats the TKOW ?Fiery? Title*

{He will feel your pain.}

Phoenix: And which one of us, volo sentio mei poena.

{Aut vincere aut mori.}

Phoenix: Either conquer.

Or die.

The screen flashes, three times, and in one flash Carpenter seems to appear, crouched on the pile, directly over Phoenix?s shoulder. He?s only there for an instant, however, and the scene is once again-

OOC: The program and newspeople in them are real, as is the website. Only Griffen and the viewer are fictional characters.

A masculine hand pushes a vhs tape into a vcr.

Male Voice: Let's just see what he said.

~hhhhhhuuuuummmmmmm~

A medley of commercials promoting a local Kentucky ABC television morning lineup flashes on the TV, including programs such as "Good Morning, America," "Live with Regis and Kelly," "The View," and ending with "WBKO Midday Live," and are fast-forwarded through.

The scene fades to WBKO's "AM Kentucky Live" set where a young woman and a middle-aged heavyset man sit and the tape slows to normal speed.

Woman: Welcome back to AM Kentucky Live. It's 6:03 a.m. and, if you're just joining us, I'm Courtney Lassiter.

Man: And I'm Chris Allen.

Courtney Lassiter: Chris, it was unpleasantly hot yesterday, reaching into the mid 90s with the humidity putting us into the 100s with the heat index. That's the danger zone. Will we reach that again today? And will we get more of the severe storms that have been rumbling through South Central Kentucky, Northern Tennessee, and the rest of the Ohio Valley area?

Chris Allen: I'm afraid so, Courtney, and I'll update everyone in the Weather Center shortly, but right now I'm being told that Jeff Woods, our morning sports guy, has a surprise for us over in the Sports Center. *turning to glance over to the sports set* So Jeff, what's going on?

The camera switches to the sports set, focusing on the youthful Jeff Woods.

Jeff Woods: *thrilled* Well, Chris, this morning I have a local hometown boy who's making a name for himself in the wrestling industry. In his career he has won a Brutality title and two sets of tag titles along with his tag partner, Lady Hawke. He has been in the ring with wrestling greats such as "The Punisher" Dan Stein, Cobryn, Death Gojira, Soulfly, Adrian Tanner, Jr., Syberus, and Jonnie Valentine's Hellhounds. In just a week or so at TKOW's MegaBowl V he'll be going up for the biggest title so far in his singles career and he'll have to fight and beat one of his stablemates and good friend, the infamous Phoenix, the current TKOW champion, to do that, but that's not all! If he does get the gold that's only the first step because it's not just one match, but a two match tourney! He'd still have to go through the second and final match in the tourney to retain that title or lose to one of two men he's been at odds with recently!

Courtney Lassiter (from across the stage):
I'm not really into wrestling, so who is this man?

Jeff Woods: Courtney, I'd like to welcome Matt Griffen, formerly from HPWA and now TKOW.

The camera pulls back and the shot widens. Woods turns to his left where Griffen sits dressed in dress slacks and shirt.

Jeff Woods: Welcome, Matt. I'd like to thank you for getting up so early and taking time out of your busy schedule to come join us this morning.

Matt: *smiling* You're welcome, Jeff. It wasn't any trouble. I've come home for a couple weeks to prepare for my match at MegaBowl V, get in some catfishing *grin* in between training and practice sessions while the fishing's good, and spend some time with my family.

Jeff Woods: I've been hearing it's a good year for catfishing.

Matt: It has been. Brought home the proof.

Jeff Woods: As much as I'd like to let you keep talking about fishing, that's not what we're here for today. We're here to talk about your upcoming matches in Las Vegas next week. You're in the Firestarter Tourney for the TKOW "Fiery" Title, *looks at notes* if I read correctly, and that's currently held by your long-time friend and stablemate, Phoenix. I've seen the recent tapes and managed to get ahold of some prior matches from the two of you. You guys don't look like you're acting but really fighting in your matches.

Matt: We're not World Wrestling Entertainment, Jeff. We're TKOW and what we do is the real thing. People get hurt; people get seriously injured. I've the scars to show it and so does Phoenix.

Jeff Woods: Speaking of Phoenix, how are you going to take this match? I mean, he IS your friend, right?

Matt: He is, Jeff, but I can't let that stand in the way. Every time we've fought one another it's been to the best of our abilities. The two of us don't pussyfoot around with one another but do what we can to win. Unfortunately in the past he's had what it's taken to get the better of me every time. Firestarter will be my chance to do the unthinkable... defeat Phoenix and end his TKOW winning streak.

Jeff: Will this harm your friendship?

Matt: I shouldn't think so. I mean, he's supported me most of my career, trained me, given me pointers. Even though he doesn't like losing, I don't believe it'd break our friendship if I finally beat him. He says he wants to see me succeed in the business and has proven that time and time again. Taking the "Fiery" Title from him would prove I've finally reached that point where I can be taken seriously in the wrestling world, although I'm sure there'd be some naysayers.

Jeff: What do you mean?

Matt: Well, if he wins, I'm sure there'd be locker room rumors that I took the fall for him to make him look good. After all, according to some, I'm just his 'lackey' and that he and I were just paired up so he could progress to the finals instead of possibly losing to Burden or Tyrenus in the first round. He's the favored choice at the moment. No one wants to see him lose except those that hate him. So I'm the underdog, just like I was for the Brutality title and both sets of tag titles my partner and I won in Ring Syndicate and TKOW. No one expects me to win. Everyone assumes Phoenix will win and go on to the finals.

Jeff: What makes you say that, Matt? You must have the ability or you wouldn't be in the tourney, right?

Matt: I know and those who matter know I do, but to a certain group of people it's all about T.H. stacking the deck in Section 8's favor.

Jeff: T.H.? *glances down at notes* Ooooohhh... T.H. Power who owns the PowerUp Gym here in town.

Matt: Yeah.

Jeff: Is it?

Matt: No. If that were really the case Phoenix and I wouldn't be in that escape only cage match against one another. We'd each be facing one of the other two instead. There's also something about the cage that brings out the best and worst in me... and Phoenix. And talking about Phoenix being favored, just have a look at some of the internet sites that follow TKOW. In the predictions, the fans, everyone is going for Phoenix. Of course if I weren't the one fighting him...

Griffen's face hardens slightly and his eyes darken to a greenish color.

Matt: I have to win. It's time for me to step up and prove myself in the singles division in TKOW as I did in tagging and in the brutality division of HPWA. Otherwise I'll continue to just to be in the fed doing not much of anything for anything. Jeff, I've been at this since the Fall of 2003--soon to be 3 years. I don't have much to show for it. Yes, I've earned three titles within that time, but two were won within the first year of wrestling. However, I do have to say the most important thing I've achieved in that time is winning the woman who stole my heart in and out of the ring. I want her to be proud of me. Maybe with winning the title from Phoenix she'll finally decide to set that date I've been waiting so long for.

Chris Allen (from across the stage): Whoa whoa whoa! Date?

Courtney Lassiter (from across the stage): As in wedding date? And with who?

Jeff Woods: Lady Hawke?

Matt: Yep. I asked her at Christmas and she took her time... and I mean REALLY took her time to give me an answer. It's just a question of setting the date, but with our work schedule it's been hard to do. She'll probably give me a hard way to go now, since I let the public know. We'd only told family and close friends.

Chris Allen (from across the stage): Man, I wouldn't want to be in your shoes when she finds out. I've seen her in action. Not anyone to mess with, for sure. Good luck though.

Courtney Lassiter: When you do start planning, just click on our website and use our wedding planner.

Jeff Woods: *reaching out to shake hands* Matt, that's all the time we have this morning. Thanks again for coming and sharing a bit of your time with us. If you'd care to stick around, there are a few more questions I'd like to ask for a segment for the evening and late news.

Griffen leans to take Wood's hand and shake it.

Matt: Sure thing, Jeff. Thanks for having me.

The camera switches back to Chris and Courtney.

Chris Allen: When we get back from commercial I'll give a weather update and this week's forecast.

Courtney Lassiter: And don't forget to send in your entries for the Holiday World Family Fun Friday! Check out www.WBKO.com and click on contests and giveaways.

OOC: Many of you may remember this. It's baaaaaaaaaack...

With a twist.

The first section is what happens. The first two quoted text blocks are replays from Mass Khaos, being displayed to Phoenix. Tha block at the end is what's sent out "across the air" as a promo.

Feedback is appreciated, as I attempted to further the story while not losing sight of the match at hand.

--------------------------

It was late Sunday, maybe early Monday. I stopped caring about timezones when I bought Greenfire Island. The HPWA computer system was set to page me at the times I needed to remember, and that was good enough for me.

I hadn't seen her since Mass Khaos. That was, what, a month ago already. I went and did what I was good at.

I hid from my problems.

Sure, I tackled all these man to man issues, taking out deeply rooted frustrations on the nearest piece of flesh and muscle I could get my hands on, but this, this was different.

This was a matter of the heart, the mind, and, unfortunately for me, the soul.

I didn't even pay attention as walked back into the Pit. I was quietly reflecting recent weeks. And I found myself here, in my very own Phoenix Pit. The original, carted from WWR to HPWA and now incorporated into caves I had excavated underground on the island I bought. The recreation that was being prepared for MegaBowl V was a spectacular attempt, but it paled in comparison to the true art that was embedded into my home away from home. The "natural" caves made the creepyness of the entire setup truthful, full of life...

And reeking of death.

You're still here, aren't you.

You're still here, are you?

My voice was low, nearly a whisper. The caves echoed, amplified, deepened me, reflecting my vocal offerings back at me in such a way it was as if someone else had asked ME a question.

You think you can mess with my mind, twist it to your own ends, because of some, "information" you say you have. You can't do it.

You can't do it.

MegaBowl V.

What makes you think I can't?

What makes you think I care?

You want me to be at odds with my friends. The people I love, the people that support me. You think that without them, the part of me that's you can take hold. You won't change me.

You won't stop me.

What do you think? You think I won't take everything I have and use it against Matt? You think I'll go soft because we're friends? He's like my brother!

He's not your brother.

It doesn't matter what he is! He and I, we have missions! We have goals! We each want the same thing! And we will both do whatever it takes to get there!

Silence.

At MegaBowl V, I'm going to have to hurt my friend in order to win. I have to hurt him worse than he's ever been hurt before. I have to put him through hell. Your kind of hell.

Your kind of hell.

You think that's going to help you? You think, that because I don't want to hurt my friend, because I HAVE to hurt my friend, that it will give you the opening you need. I'm not you! *yelling* I'm nothing like you! *screaming* I'll never be like you!!

Somewhere in the darkness, a monitor turns on. I know better than to think he's there...

TKOW MK 6/14 Tape said:

Johnny: NO NOT THE DARK ARENA! ANYTHING BUT THAT!!

A soft red glow fades onto the ring. Aello is facing the ramp, at the ready, but Carpenter is standing behind her with a baseball bat! As he raises it, the crowd screams, and Aello perks up. Suddenly the lights go out again!

Tito: Power's rich, he could at least pay the damned electric bill!

A *SMACK* and a *THUD* is heard from the ring! Soon after that, loud stomping can be heard, along with Aello yelling at, apparantly, her fallen foe! Then the lights come back up-

Tito: How the-

Johnny: -heck did he get in there?

Aello stops with a jolt as she sees what everyone else sees...

Phoenix!

Aello stays frozen on her knees, shaking slightly as Phoenix rolls out of the ring, bat in hand, stunned. He shakes his head at her and suddenly jumps the barricade and leaves through the crowd. Aello cries out after him, but he's already disappeared into the sea of people.

TKOW MK 6/14 Tape said:

Voice: I'll even, just to be proper, take on your wench in a Street Fight. That way no one will know where I might strike. Just like they don't know now...

The lights fail, again, and flashbulbs pop as the crowd attempts to get a glimpse of what may be happening.

The eerie red glow again appears, showing T.H. Power on the outside of the ring, Matt facing the crowd, and Phoenix scanning the arena, and Carpenter in between the two! Phoenix starts, rears back with the belt-

Voice: HUHAHAHAHAHEHEHAHAHEHEAHHAA!!

The lights fall once more as the laughter permeates the arena, and a *THUMP* is heard from the ring. The lights come back up to show Phoenix standing over Matt Griffen, who is holding his head, apparantly the victim of a belt shot to the face!

The Birds run down to the ring, causing T.H. to turn, see what happened, and slide back in as well. Phoenix seems to wake up at that moment and steps back to the ropes, then backflips over them to the floor. As Lady Hawke and T.H. check on Matt, Aello and the man come to the ropes. Phoenix shakes his head and hops the barricade for the second time that night.

Voice: I told you once, Phoenix, that I'd have my revenge. Now, it begins. Now the master, becomes the servant...

I'm shaken. Frozen. He knows it. He feeds on it.

Wh... wha... what d-do you want... f-fr-from, me...

I was so struck by the memory, that words were failing me. I was weak. Just like he wanted.

What does any little boy want.

The screen shows a split image. An image of Phoenix standing over Matt. An image of Phoenix standing over Jace Mingla. An image of Phoenix standing over Soulfly. An image of Phoenix standing over Dave Rave.

A brother to look up to.

No. Not this way.

I c-can't...

You can.

Not this way.

I won't.

You will.

NOT THIS WAY!

You can't make me.

I won't need to. The gasoline is already spilt. The fire in your very soul will spark it. And Matt will burn.

Matt will not suffer for my sins.

They all will suffer for your sins. They suffered your sins through Jace Mingla, did they not? Did Matt not suffer your sins with Soutter? And here, once more, they will all suffer, because of you, through me. Only you can save them.

I'll stop you.

If you do, you don't get what you want. What you desire. What you need.

You're lying. You have nothing.

At MegaBowl, you'll find out. Only if you do as I say. Only if you destroy Matt Griffen.

I'm going to beat Matt Griffen. Nothing more, nothing less. It's that simple. DO YOU HEAR ME?! Nothing will change that! NO ONE CAN CHANGE THAT! Matt will fall. Matt will lose. I will walk out of that cage with my title, and with the respect of my friends and those fans.

It's not enough. At MegaBowl, I'll prove it to you.

There is NOTHING you can do to stop me!

Stop me.

I walked out of the caves, knowing I'd never find him. There were four different ways into the Pit, and without the fires lit, no light at all.

Unbeknownst to me, Carpenter pushed stop on a HPWA Headcam as I left. I found out the next morning, as this played...

Wh... wha... what d-do you want... f-fr-from, me...

The screen shows a split image. An image of Phoenix standing over Matt. An image of Phoenix standing over Jace Mingla. An image of Phoenix standing over Soulfly. An image of Phoenix standing over Dave Rave.

I c-can't...

I won't.

You can't make me.

Matt will not suffer for my sins.

I'll stop you.

You're lying. You have nothing.

There is NOTHING you can do to stop me!

I sat in that house, that mansion, on Greenfire Island, watching this. And I wondered.

Was he right? Was it time? Could I do nothing else?

*mumbling* Matt... I'm sorry...

The camera shakes and jerks as the cameraman exits from a vehicle, closing the door with a slight click. It moves through the darkness in night vision mode, avoiding focusing too much on the bright glows of the nearby houses. The quiet footsteps on concrete are nearly lost in the cacophany of 'barrrrrup' and 'ribbits' from frogs and the constant buzzing and chirping of crickets. Once the camera moves into a beautifully landscaped lawn filled with large flowerbeds bursting to the brim with plants the sound of footsteps is lost completely and only breathing can be made out underneath the sounds of the night.

Voice: *muttering quietly behind the camera* Why does the Boss always send me to do this? AND with YOU?! You always get us in trouble.

Second Voice: *coming from the left* I do not, Jason!

Jason Luna:
Yeah... right, James. You're NEVER the one that's in the midst of trouble. Now hush or they'll hear us.

James Luna: You started it.

Jason: Oh... let's not even go there. Now shush.

The camera weaves its way around the side of the house into the back yard. It moves more slowly and nearer the ground as it approaches the patio on the back of the two-story structure. The night vision is switched off and the colors change to normal. Citronella torches illuminate the area and a large man in shorts and muscle shirt stands on a lower section and half sits/half leans against a built-in low wall on the upper section behind him. The camera moves behind a thinly leaved shrub and focuses in on the man--Matt Griffen. A glass half filled with ice and a dark translucent liquid is absent-mindedly forgotten in his hands as he stares off vacantly into the darkness. Music by Black Stone Cherry plays at a low volume in the background.

One of the glass patio doors opens. A female dressed in a short, dark, silk looking, oriental patterned robe walks out, her face hidden in the towel she's using to dry her hair. She strides across the upper patio and down the steps and approaches Griffen, dropping the towel and letting it drape over her shoulders and neck as she faces away from the camera and toward him.

James: *whispering excitedly* Matt's cheating on Skye!!

Jason: *whispering disgustedly* Puuullleeaase... You really think he's stupid enough to bring another woman in her house? He's not you. Look again, Idiot. She's Skye. Besides, he wouldn't cheat on her. He has too high a moral and ethical standard.

The camera zooms in on her as she reaches out and takes the glass from Griffen's hands and sets it upon the railing, the scars on her arm evident even in the torch lighting.

Jason: *whispering* Now be quiet before they hear us.

Griffen glances down at his love and envelopes her in his arms as she moves closer to him, only half-heartedly giving her a smile. She leans back in his arms and lifts a hand and runs her fingers along the side of his face while canting her head to the side. He reaches up and brings the palm of her hand to his lips and kisses it and holds it to his jaw and cheek after.

Matt: I'll be alright. It's just... *sigh* ...there's a lot on my mind.

She apparently asks him something that can't be picked up on the mic and the volume suddenly increases as Griffen nods.

Matt: Yeah. Him and whichever one I'll be facing after if I can get past him.

Skye moves her hand from his cheek and uses her finger to lightly press a finger to a spot between his eyes. He slightly nods again.

Matt: I will be. I have to be.

He sighs again and glances down, taking her hand and pulling it down.

Matt: This time it just... doesn't feel right, ya know? All the prior times we've fought against each other it's been okay, no probs, even when we were at odds, but this time... I don't know, Skye. Something feels off and it's bugging me that I can't put my finger on it.

Skye sighs and leans her forehead on his chest.

Matt: You know, don't you? *lifting her face* You've seen it here-

He kisses her forehead.

Matt: -haven't you?

He drops his forehead to hers.

Matt: *quietly* Why can't you tell me?

Skye: *barely detectable whisper* Only possibility, not a definate outcome. Saying could set it.

James: *puzzled whisper* What are they-

Jason: *whisper* SHHH!

Matt: So it's still open and can go several ways. I suppose that's a good thing. That means it's not certain he'll win. I still have a chance then, even though he says not.

James: *muffled* mMemmmeiiimmmmhhmmmeeemmmmoooomm...

Skye nods.

Skye: *whisper* Coming to ring with you.

Matt: No-

Skye places her fingers over his lips.

Skye: *whisper* Yes.

Matt: I don't need to worry about you when I'm-

She removes her fingers and kisses him quiet, then leans forward and whispers something in his ear that is too quiet to be heard. She leans back.

Skye: *fading whisper* You no worry. I worry.

She gets a slight cough and reaches for the glass, taking a sip.

Matt: It's going to be hard fighting him. Quinn knows me too well. He knows everything I'll try. That's why I wanted to come home, so I can work on stuff without him knowing. This fight... it could be a new beginning for me. The win would prove I'm someone to be reckoned with. I don't want to always be second best, always in someone's shadow...

Matt looks her straight in the eyes.

Matt: ...especially his. I want to be number one. I've worked too hard to get this far without whiners crying that it was handed to me on a platter just because I'm Section 8.

He removes his arms from her and steps away toward and looking directly in the camera's direction, his face filled with a mixture of disappointment and determination.

Matt: It's like everything I've done is moot because we're friends and hang out.

Griffen sighs and folds his arms across his chest, glancing down. Her arms snake around his waist from behind, hugging him tightly. He relaxes his arms and places his over hers instead.

Matt: I know I shouldn't let it bother me, but everyone has moments of weakness. I suppose it's better I get it out now than in the ring at MegaBowl V. I'd really like to be able to bring that title home and show Mammaw before she leaves out, too, ya know? She doesn't have much longer.

The disappointment disappears from his face, leaving only the determination.

Matt: So that's what I have to do. I fight Quinn until he can't stop me from going over or I can gain a good lead and escape, then make the winner between Burden and Tyrenus tap out.

A wry grin crosses his lips.

Matt: Of course, it's easier said than done, but it's not impossible. I just have to do it one step at a time with maybe a few leaps thrown in for fun.

Griffen turns in Skye's arms, still blocking her from view. Within moments the towel falls to the stone terrace and then she loudly gasps and jumps. Her robe nearly joins the towel but the hem hangs a few inches above the towel. An aggravated whistling starts, abruptly cut off by a second loud gasp.

Griffen turns his head to look over his shoulder... directly into the camera.

Matt: Jason, you and whoever is with you-

Jason:
SHIT!

Matt: -I'm assuming James, had better get the hell out of here right now. If you don't, I'll let Skye loose on you... and you won't survive this time. Don't hide where the light can reflect off the lens and your pale faces.

The camera jerks to the side as Jason scrambles. The whistling starts up again and this time the robe flies through the air, landing near the shrub. The scene shows James staring toward the patio, a dumbfounded, surprised look on his face. A hand reaches out from behind the camera and grabs him, jerking him into a stumbling run along the house.

Jason: C'mon!!

James: But.. she... was...

Days later, I ventured back down into the Pit. Natural light filtered in, but I also carried with me my black steel baseball bat, a rag wrapped around the end, lit; a makeshift torch.

Retrieving the metallic bottle of lighter fluid from a cargo pocket on my black jeans, I liberally sprayed the firepit to my immediate right, then touched the burning end of the bat to the wood.

Once the flames began to spring up from the stone circle, I surveyed the open room. While the light didn?t reach the farthest corners of my hideaway, I was fairly certain I wasn?t going to have another experience like my last visit.

I thumped the fiery end of the bat into the dirt and scraped the rags off with my boot, and kicked them into the pit. I looked over and saw that one of the cameras I usually used to tape was lying on it?s side; a careless replacement, or, more probable, a purposeful sign of the prior intrusion. He wanted me to know I wasn?t losing my mind.

Or I really was.

I placed the bat against the throne and sat down heavily, shifting the metal, causing whisps of dust to rise into the air. Rubbing the gauntlet that covered the tattoo of the cross bearing my son?s name and birthdate, I thought about my brothers accusations, his comments, and the possibilities he brought to light.

As quickly as my mind began to filter the knowledge, I forced myself to stop. Three days until MegaBowl, I thought. Three days until the fights of my life. I knew I had to focus, had to remember?

Matt?

I extracted the remote for the cameras, cleared my throat, composed myself, and pressed record.

We are three days from the biggest event in TKOW history. MegaBowl V, the first MegaBowl under the flag of the Higher Power Wrestling Association. The first MegaBowl to feature an Invitational tournament including many wrestlers not part of the TKOW roster. The first MegaBowl to showcase four of the very best in TKOW vying for the greatest prize in the game. The first MegaBowl where one man has the opportunity to create, history.

Matt, I?ve said a lot about you leading up to this match. I?ve said a lot about you over the time I?ve known you. I?ve said good things, I?ve said bad things. I?ve ignored your abilites, and I?ve talked you up as a giant among men. What?s real? What?s smack? What?s just made up?

Years ago I found you and Lady Hawke, I took you two under my wing, pun intended, with the intention of creating a force to be reckoned with. I did just that. Natural talent notwithstanding, I groomed each of you to the unstoppable forces of nature you became. I took the gentle giant and honed him into a brutal destruction machine, and I taught the scarred soul to channel and control her anger and emotions. I was responsible for much of what you two are today.

I shift in my seat, wondering how interesting the picture will look, recording sideways.

When I look at MegaBowl V, I see the end of a long hard traveled road. I have worked so hard to get to this spot, this place in wrestling history, that it is not in my nature to simply roll over and die for anyone. I will not allow you to spoil this for me Matt. I won?t allow Tobias or Salazar to spoil it for me either, but right now, this is about you, Matt. You and me.

If there is anyone in this tournament that has a chance of stopping me, it?s you Matt. You?re a former Brutality champion, the current only winner of the Phoenix Pit, and a multiple time tag team champion. You?ve held your own against me quite a few times. But this, this time, this place, this event, is different. This time, there?s more on the line than you can imagine. There?s more at stake, Matt, than you will ever, EVER, know. Let?s concentrate on what you do know.

I take the bat and point it to the side, at the replica of the ?Fiery? title hanging in the Pit.

My title. My record. My pride.

Perhaps the most important thing at stake here, to most, the TKOW title is sought after, drooled over, prayed for. It is the pinnacle of this business. The place we all want to be. I have held this belt for the last nearly 8 months, and I do not want to relinquish it. There are people out there who see me here, in this spot, as a handoff. As if all the things I did in this company before HPWA took it over never happened. As if I am undeservant. But you look at these people, these Sadler?s, Williams?, Mingla?s, Syberus?, and what do you see? You see people that couldn?t make it in TKOW. People that came out night after night, crowing about their greatness, and the spot?s they deserved, and then falling victim to the true talents TKOW had to offer.

You, Matt, are the other end of my spectrum. The Ying to my Yang. Or Yang to my Ying. You, my friend, are held back for your connections. You?ve never been given the chance to truly exceed. Until now. Surely, your time as Brutality champion was earned and well deserved, but so many, too many, look at that and call you a glorified stuntman. Even the man you beat, Bishop, simply claimed ?hardcore wasn?t his forte?.

Now here you are. At the doorstep to greatness, to great things. This is your chance, Matt, to step up, step out, and step over. This is your great opportunity Matt.

Can you do it? Most say no. I say yes. I think it?s in you. The want, the need, the will, you have it. I would know. You have the drive and the passion to do this, and keep it, as long as you want.

Will you? No. I won?t let you. I will not sacrifice my own road to let you start your own. This is my time, Matt. My title. My record. To begin your own time, you need to end mine. I can?t have that. My time isn?t over yet. I?m going to meet you in that cage, and I?m going to beat you from stem to stern, side to side, wall to wall. We?re going to execute death defying maneuvers, bone shattering slams, tendon ripping grapples, becoming bloody, bruised, and broken for the opportunity to stand tall with the TKOW title. We are going to enter that cage and thrill the fans, the roster, the lovers and the haters. We?re going to make the people stand up and take notice.

But I will come out on top, Matt. I love you like a brother, but as I said, there?s too much at stake. Too much. I will hurt you. I will put you down as if you were a rabid dog. I have to Matt. Maybe, someday, you?ll understand. Maybe, someday, I can tell you why I did what I did. Maybe, just maybe, you?ll be able to forgive me for the dark night known as MegaBowl V.

Maybe.
